Why gutters matter

Steep roofs and big trees need better gutters

Dearborn’s older homes shed a lot of water fast. A steep bungalow or Tudor roof sends rain to the eaves quickly, and a small, sagging gutter can’t keep up, so it pours over the front edge onto the walk, the brick and the foundation. In an older house with a basement, that is often where the wet corner in spring comes from.

Then there are the trees. Many Dearborn streets are lined with mature maples and oaks, and every fall they fill the gutters. Clogged troughs overflow, hold water against the fascia and freeze solid in winter, adding weight that pulls the hangers loose.

We install seamless gutters that run in one piece from corner to corner, so there are no joints along the run to open up. We size the gutters and downspouts for the roof above them, pitch them to drain, fasten them with hidden hangers into solid wood, and add guards where the trees call for them. Downspouts are placed to carry water away from the foundation and the driveway. If the fascia or the roof edge behind the old gutters is rotted, we repair that first and photograph it, so the new gutters have something solid to hold on to.

What we install

Gutter work for Dearborn homes

Everything that moves water from the roof edge to a safe spot in the yard.

Seamless gutters

One continuous run between corners, with no seams along the length to leak or pull apart.

Fewer joints, fewer drips

Downspouts & extensions

Enough downspouts for the roof area, placed so water lands well away from the foundation.

Keeps basements drier

Gutter guards

Covers that keep leaves, seeds and shingle grit out so the gutter keeps flowing between cleanings.

Cuts down on clogs

Sizing to the roof

Steep, large or valley-fed roof sections push more water; we size the gutter and outlets to match.

No overflow in downpours

Ice & snow detailing

Solid hangers, the right pitch and ice and water shield at the eaves so winter ice does less harm.

Built for freeze-thaw

Gutter repairs

Leaking corners, loose hangers and clogged or crushed downspouts fixed when the system is still worth keeping.

Repair before replace
Choosing the right setup

Gutters, guards and downspouts, side by side

Not every house needs every option. A ranch with no trees nearby may only need properly sized seamless gutters and a couple of well-placed downspouts. A two-story with oaks and maples over the roof will spend every fall clogging unless it has guards.

During the free inspection we look at the roof pitch and size, where the valleys dump water, the trees overhead and where the yard slopes, then recommend what the house actually needs. You get it in writing with photos of the problem spots, so you can compare it fairly.

If the gutters you have are the right size and still hold their pitch, we’ll say so. Sometimes a few added downspouts, longer extensions or a set of guards solve the problem without new gutters at all. And if the roof itself is near the end of its life, we’ll point that out too, because gutters are best replaced when the new drip edge goes on.

Clean install

We hang the new system, test the flow and clean up the yard before we leave.

Fighting ice dams?

Ice along the gutters usually starts on the roof: heat loss, ventilation and missing ice and water shield.

Gutters in Dearborn

Getting water away from Dearborn foundations

On close-set lots, where the downspout drains matters as much as the gutter.

Many Dearborn homes sit on narrow lots with driveways along one side and a neighbor a few feet away on the other. That leaves less room to send water away from the house, so downspout placement takes some thought: away from the foundation, away from the walk where it freezes, and not into the yard next door. We plan the layout with you during the inspection, with Michigan’s spring downpours, fall leaves and winter freeze-thaw in mind.

Downspout placement

Water directed away from basements, walks and the house next door.

Leaf guards

Guards for homes under mature trees, so the gutters keep flowing in fall.

Solid fascia

Rotted fascia and roof edge repaired before the new gutters go up.

Roofing questions

Gutter questions from Dearborn homeowners

Sizes, guards and what to expect.

My Dearborn basement gets water in spring. Could it be the gutters?
Often it is part of it. Overflowing gutters and downspouts that empty next to the foundation put a lot of water right where the basement walls are. We check the gutters and downspout layout and show you what we find.
Are gutter guards worth it on a tree-lined Dearborn street?
Under mature trees, guards usually cut down on clogs and overflow. They don’t make gutters maintenance-free, but they help a lot during leaf season.
What size gutters do I need?
It depends on the size and pitch of the roof sections above them. Steep roofs move water quickly, so we size the gutters and downspouts to the roof rather than using one standard size.
Do I need a permit for new gutters in Dearborn?
Check with the City of Dearborn building department for your address. We can explain what the job involves.
Can you install gutters with a new roof?
Yes. Doing them together lets us install drip edge, fascia repairs and gutters as one system.
Is the estimate free?
Yes. We inspect the gutters, fascia and roof edge, photograph what we find and give you a written estimate at no cost.
